While its arts scene is often overlooked in favour of bigger cities, Newcastle upon Tyne is actually home to a thriving community of galleries from the bigger arts sector-funded names like the Baltic Centre for Contemporary Art to smaller, independent galleries that are spread over the City Centre and the Quayside. Most of these galleries have an acclaimed exhibition programme featuring works of historical, modern and contemporary art.
The tour Newcastle upon Tyne – Art of Northern UK will take you through the most popular galleries of the City Centre and Quayside which feature both their permanent collection and the works of visiting artists.

Newcastle Upon Tyne – Art of Northern UK is a unique tour in a lot many ways. Here is what you can expect during the 8 Hour Full Day Tour of the Newcastle Upon Tyne in Northern UK.
We’ll meet at 10 AM at the Olive and Bean Café for a “Welcome to Newcastle Upon Tyne” meeting. You will be briefed about what to expect from this tour and how to make the best out of your visits. You can shoot your questions in the Q&A session that follows the briefing. Enjoy your coffee while you interact with the Curator/Tour Leader.
The Tour begins with a visit to one of the most popular galleries of Newcastle upon Tyne – the Laing Art Gallery which was founded in 1901. Located on New Bridge Street, the gallery was designed in the Baroque style with Art Nouveau elements by architects Cackett and Burns Dick and is now a Grade II listed building.
Our Curator/Tour Leader will walk you through the hallways of Laing Gallery which is home to an internationally imported collection of art, focusing on British oil paintings, watercolors, ceramics, silver and glassware. Browse through artworks by Henry Moore and Turner Prize nominee Paul Noble. You can also see internationally acclaimed paintings by John Martin, Paul Gauguin and Burne-Jones. This is also where you can see William Holman-Hunt’s pre-Raphaelite masterpiece Isabella and the Pot of Basil.
After an insightful visit through the Laing Gallery, we take a 5 minute walk down the New Bridge Street to Cote Brasserie – a modern, all day French brasserie chain, serving regional specialties and traditional classics. ‘Côte is inspired by the brasseries of Paris, serving authentic French dishes all day in their classically designed restaurants. Enjoy your lunch with a glass of wine and some discussion on Art in Newcastle!
Post lunch, you would be treated to some phenomenal art at three of the top most exhibitions in the City Centre and the Quayside of Newcastle upon Tyne. These would include galleries like Hatton Gallery, the Biscuit Factory and the Baltic Centre of Contemporary Art. You can look through items held in the institutional archives and records of the Hatton Gallery and walk through the former Victorian warehouse, that houses Biscuit Factory’s beautiful gallery spaces, displaying a range of contemporary fine art, sculpture, original prints and jewelry. Get inspired at the Baltic Centre of Contemporary Art – UK’s largest dedicated contemporary art institution.
You can engage the Curator/Tour Leader for some insightful talk about the exhibits and also to take advice on what to buy if you get interested in doing so.
Dine at the Rooftop Restaurant of the Baltic Centre of Contemporary art for some modern British inspired cooking and enjoy some of the most breathtaking panoramic views of Newcastle upon Tyne. It is a brilliant way to end your day full of insightful art and walks through the streets of the city. The day ends with summing up and feedback along with attractive offers for other art tours in other art destinations of the world.
Daniela Borislavova Kisimova is currently coming to the end of her Bachelors Degree in Arts and Humanities which was strongly focused on developing her understanding and knowledge of Art History and Visual Culture. Apart from my academic link to Art,she also works in a Fine Art Gallery as a Curator and Art Dealer. Her love and appreciation for all forms and styles of visual art began since a very young age. This resulted in her decision to take various art classes both at high school and college.
Art being Daniela’s main passion and interest which she has been able to share with others at work and will gladly do the same as a tour leader for Newcastle Art Tour. Her insight gained with the art gallery will be very useful for those yearning to understand and purchase some of the outstanding artworks available in Newcastle.
