Considered to be the most updated center for main discourses in the international art world, expressing a wide range of innovative ideas and outstanding techniques, Chelsea is currently home to more than 350 galleries, institutions and independent art projects. It has some of the most important art galleries today, representing the most acclaimed artists from around the world.
While going through Chelsea, one will see how it has evolved and still remains a hip and fun location. Most importantly, Chelsea is definitely the place to be to engage with the contemporary world of art!
We start the tour with a “Welcome to the Tour” meeting at the Whitney Coffee Shop. The Curator/Tour Leader will explain the tour details with a brief introduction to the history and the evolution of art in the Chelsea District of New York. This would be an informal meeting over a cup of coffee followed by a quick Q&A session.
Enjoy a curated walk through the Whitney Museum of American Art. Founded in 1930 by Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney, the museum focuses on 20th- and 21st-century American art. Its permanent collection comprises more than 23,000 paintings, sculptures, drawings, prints, photographs, films, videos, and artifacts of new media by more than 3,400 artists. It places particular emphasis on exhibiting the work of living artists as well as maintaining an extensive permanent collection of important pieces from the first half of the last century. The museum’s Annual and Biennial exhibitions have long been a venue for younger and lesser-known artists whose work is showcased there.
Our pre-lunch session ends with a lunch. When in Chelsea, the Westville is a one-stop shop for all comfort food. Its a local hangout for meals that may include their much sought-after veggie burger, the heavenly smoky mac & cheese, or their best-selling market vegetable plate – It’s completely up to you. We can have a discussion on our discoveries over lunch and a glass of wine!
After lunch, we go in for an unforgettable tour of three of the top most exhibitions in the ACC Network. The tour would include galleries like 303, Petzel, Metro Pictures, Pace, Gagosian, Marian Goodman, Hauser & Wirth, Tanya Bonakdar, Michael Rosenfeld, Matthew Marks, Luhring Augustine.
It’s time to relax after a hectic tour of museums and galleries. But if you have visited Chelsea and you haven’t been on the High Line elevated walking path, your tour is not complete. Stroll down the beautiful track and enjoy some public art and architecture. We say our good byes and disperse for the day!
